Contact Your Elected Officials
Elected officials are an excellent resource for those navigating the tangle of forms and bureaucracy that exist at every level of government. These officials are an important bridge; they are part of the government, but they are the part that works directly for you.
Not only do these representatives have a better understanding of how to resolve your issue, but they often have tools for cutting through red tape on behalf of constituents not available to the general public. Although your representatives and their capitol and district staff members will usually be happy to serve you, it is important to respect their busy schedules. One of the most important ways you can help get your issue resolved quickly is to direct your request to the right person.
Matching the right official to your issue is essential, but can be a difficult and confusing process. In addition to the 120 members of the State Senate and Assembly, the Legislature also has more than 150 committees, examining issues from horse racing and wine production to Perchlorate contamination and hate crimes.
Most people find that the best results often come from contacting their most local representative. For issues with federal agencies or organizations, your member of congress can usually be of more assistance than your U.S. Senator. Similarly, with state government issues, your member of the Assembly can usually be helpful than your State Senator.
