Legislative Retirement

In December 2024, Assemblyman Corey Jackson introduced legislation (ACA 2 of 2024), the “Legislative Diversification Act”, which would create a retirement system for state lawmakers who served at least a decade. Of particular note is that the legislation is retroactive, requiring that the retirement system include “Members elected to or serving in the Legislature on or after November 1, 2010”.

There are 13 sitting legislators who have already served 10 or more years in office:

Fun Fact

Half of California’s Assemblymembers since 1990 have never termed out? That’s right; of the 348 legislators to serve in the lower house in the past 21 years, only 151 (43%) termed out. Even if you exclude the 80 members currently serving, only 56% of Assemblymembers ever termed out.
