With the introduction of term limits in 1990, Californias see a regular turnover in the state legislature. With 80 new Assembly members every six years, and 40 new State Senators every eight, there are a lot of new faces coming into California politics. But how do these people fit into the history of California politics? With more than 60 years of elections history, the JoinCalifornia website allows visitors to learn about the political parties (ex. Independent Progressive Party) that have run candidates in California, and also about the candidates themselves (ex. Tom McClintock or Jerry Brown).

Based on information pubished in the Statement of Vote by the Secretary of State, JoinCalifornia includes more than six thousand candidates running in over twelve thousand campaigns. We are continuing to make improvements to the website, but the current database includes state legislative races back to 1898, and Congress and the statewide offices back to 1849. In the near future, we plan to expand coverage to include the state legislature back to 1849.
