SD-01 Special Election Results

Brian Dahle won last Tuesday’s special election in SD-01, and was sworn in eight days later. What I thought was interesting was that with the southern part of the district reporting vote totals earlier, Kevin Kiley led in the returns until over a third of the votes had been cast. The timeline is listed below.

8:25pm – 29.4% of precincts reporting, Kiley leads 59.4 to 40.6.
8:29pm – 33.0% of precincts reporting, Kiley leads 57.4 to 42.6.
8:30pm – 37.8% of precincts reporting, Kiley leads 53.2 to 46.8.
8:39pm – 38.1% of precincts reporting, Dahle leads 51.8 to 48.6.
8:42pm – 45.9% of precincts reporting, Dahle leads 52.5 to 47.5.
8:50pm – 46.5% of precincts reporting, Dahle leads 52.6 to 47.4.
8:53pm – 47.6% of precincts reporting, Dahle leads 52.6 to 47.4.
9:06pm – 47.8% of precincts reporting, Dahle leads 52.6 to 47.4.
9:13pm – 54.1% of precincts reporting, Dahle leads 52.6 to 47.4.
9:27pm – 60.7% of precincts reporting, Dahle leads 52.6 to 47.4.
9:37pm – 61.5% of precincts reporting, Dahle leads 52.6 to 47.4.
10:00pm – 66.2% of precincts reporting, Dahle leads 52.8 to 47.2.
10:19pm – 69.8% of precincts reporting, Dahle leads 52.9 to 47.1.
10:42pm – 76.3% of precincts reporting, Dahle leads 53.5 to 46.5.
12:10am – 100.0% of precincts reporting, Dahle leads 53.1 to 46.9.
6/7/19 – 100.0% of precincts reporting, Dahle leads 53.3 to 46.6.

Fun Fact

The highest vote count for a State Senator was in 1958, when Richard Richards ran unopposed for reelection and won with more than 1.4 million votes. At the time, State Senate districts were apportioned by county rather than population, and Richards represented the entirety of Los Angeles County (which now contains parts of 14 Senate […]
