Superbowl Sunday

Assemblyman Peter Schabarum played for the 49ers in the 1950s.

Just to confirm what you probably already suspected: no California legislator has ever played in a Super Bowl game.

Assemblyman Peter Schabarum played for the San Francisco 49ers (who will hopefully win today) in 1951 and 1953-54.

Senator Ed Vincent played for the Los Angeles Rams in 1950s, as did Marlin McKeever (a 1970s candidate for State Assembly).

Then there were the legislators who played other sports; Assemblyman William R. Wheaton was one of the first-ever baseball umpires and Bob Mathias (ok, he was a California congressman, not legislator) won two Olympic gold medals.

And who could forget Senator Tony Strickland, who played for a season with the Los Angeles Lightening (International Basketball League) in 2009? Not I.

So, no Superbowl champions in the Legislature yet… but there’s always 2014.
