How Big a Footprint?

The State Controller’s latest Active State Employees by Agency / Facility report had some interesting information. Two items in particular that are worth noting:

How many positions does each constitutional body oversee?
Governor – 233,608 employees
Attorney General – 5,443 employees
Superintendent of Public Instruction – 2,428 employees
Courts – 1,673 employees Divided into Supreme Court (130), Judicial Council (833), and Courts of Appeal (710)
State Controller – 1,525 employees
Insurance Commissioner – 1,240 employees
Secretary of State – 679 employees
State Treasurer – 260 employees
State Board of Equalization – 161 employees
Lieutenant Governor – 11 employees

What are the smallest parts of California State Government?
First, I’ve counted the staff of the numerous boards and commissions within the State Department of Consumer Affairs as a single unit (which may or may not be fair depending on your perspective).
Office of the Lt. Governor – 11 employees
Colorado River Board – 10 employees
Board of Pilot Commissioners – 9 employees
Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy – 9 employees
State Independent Living Council – 8 employees
Judicial Center Library – 8 employees
Commission on California State Government Organization and Economy (within GO-Biz) – 8 employees
Coachella Valley Mount Conservancy – 8 employees
San Joaquin River Conservancy – 7 employees
Delta Protection Commission – 7 employees
Commission on Asian and Pacific Islander American Affairs – 6 employees
Commission on Uniform State Laws – 6 employees
Citizens Compensation Commission – 4 employees
San Diego River Conservancy – 4 employees
Educational Facilities Authority – 3 employees
Commission on Aging – 3 employees
California Senior Legislature – 1 employee

Fun Fact

The highest vote count for a State Assemblymember was in 2008,when Ted Gaines won with 166,736 votes. His high count was a combination of a district whose population had grown faster than any other since the last redistricting and being the only candidate on the ballot.
